What a way to bring in the new year!
Hailing from a small university town, Lüneburg not far from Hamburg; Session Victim have cemented their name in house music circles in the past years. Reining in a fresh perspective on how to make a dance floor move.
The duo; Hauke Freer & Matthias Reiling became close friends in the early 90′s as teens, blowing off school, organising parties with a small crew of friends, and spending hours in their hometown’s sole record store. Given that both were active first as DJs and then as producers, it’s surprising that Session Victim formed as late as it did.
Their first release “No Friends” dropped in 2008 with a serious BANG! I know that i had it on repeat for at least a week… It was all the elements of a classic house tune, with a current day twist. This was followed up by “Out on love ep”, once again a catchy dance floor tune to get the feet moving. Quoting the press release for the first track of the ep (“Memory Lane”)
The first track on the EP starts off quite simply but your excitement builds as promising chords and a Detroit-style acid-synth give you an idea where Memory Laneis heading. After a dramatic break that features a notorious groove legend proclaiming that he’s out on love, the chords reveal their full potential and the track rolls into a major floor filler, complete with tight drum patterns, extra sub bass and some more vocal snippets. Yes!
I couldn’t have said it better than that….Some quick snippets of their first two ep’s below
SESSION VICTIM – MEMORY LANE
After the the warm reception of their first two releases under the Session Victim alias, the lads moved out another 3 records all in 2009. One on their label Retreat, another with Real Soon and the third with German imprint Hairy Claw.
Love the summer vibe on this one
SESSION VICTIM – DANISH DAUGHTERS
2010 brought with it their first release with Delusions of Grandeur entitled million dollar feeling, soon followed by another, “Left the building”. The vibe on this being more focused on disco elements , prominent vocal stabs and classic bassline sounds, raw percussion and disco boo’s.
Their most recent work is with Future Classic and happened to be remix duties for the king of Adelaide disco Sidwho? His track “I do the night” was entirely reworked in true techno fashion, but still quite similar format to the original. A deep slow burner….
It’s clear that this duo have plenty of inspiration to merge sounds and genres as they please. From the short 2 year period that has been, they have touched on a variety of tempos, and vibes but still kept a central philosophy of music made for the club (Dance floor). I’m really excited to see what they have hidden away in their record bags! And by the way….. They do play a strictly vinyl set!
These guys will blow the roof off, i have no doubt!
